Sandra asks…

Cost of living in Dubai?

What is the average cost of living in Dubai for a family of 5? My husband has received a job offer and I am curious to know how good it really is.

1.) How much is schooling? We have two children who are currently in school. The company will pay 30,400AED a year for their schooling. Will this be enough?

2.) What can we expect to pay for a nice, new mid-sized car (I kinda like cars like VW Passats)? They are giving us a loan on 70,000AED to go to the purchase of a car. Will this be enough or should we expect to pay some from our own pocket?

3.) His starting salary will be around 23,000-25,000AED a month. Is this sufficient to be able to enjoy ourselves (go out to eat, movies, etc)?

They will provide housing (including furniture, appliances, all other furnishings, plus pay for cooking gas, electricity, and water), so we don’t have to worry about that.

What other things should I know about life in Dubai?
The schooling allowance of 30,400AED a year is per kid, so we’d actually be getting 60,800AED a year for schooling costs.

When I lived in Abu Dhabi/Dubai, my schooling tuition fees were around 16000 AED – Paied for by my father’s company. The school that your children will potentially be enrolled in is an American/Canadian’/British International Private School.

I would stick with a mid-sized car, such as a Nissan Maxima on that salary. If you want to purchase a luxury vechile, by all means, however, I would recommend starting small/mid-size first.

Think about its, thats wround 300000 AED a year, which means that this is sufficient to indulge yourselves into the luxuries The UAE has to offer, however, I wouldn’t suggest playing it big every week, however, to reitterate, yes, it should be more than enough to pamper yourselves ’sporadically’.

They will provide housing (including furniture, appliances, all other furnishings, plus pay for cooking gas, electricity, and water), so we don’t have to worry about that.

Yes, most companies offer accommodation, waived bills etc to lure foreigners to work there.

Other things about Dubai:
For a city that looks exteremly lax, which is is mind you, they are extremely strict, especially on issues such as homosexuality, which is almost like braking a taboo. However, I think you will enjoy yourselves there, however, i wouldn’t reccoment living there for over 10 years, as your family will want to move back, no doubts there!

Personally, I would prefer to handle any matters of financing with an independent third party who is licensed and experienced in such matters.

Otherwise, if you have no preference and there is otherwise no difference between the parties involved, I’d simply choose the alternative that presents the greatest financial benefit.

Best of luck. I hope this helps.
